Cáceres, September 16, 2025 – From September 22 to 26, Cáceres will host the 51st Annual Meeting of the Spanish Nuclear Society (SNE). In addition to bringing together the leading experts in the sector, the event will feature a program of outreach activities open to the public, starting on Monday, September 22.
Workshops for secondary school students, theater, talks with the University of Seniors, and informal gatherings in local bars are some of the activities being organized. These initiatives are free and open to everyone, with the goal of bringing knowledge and advances in nuclear energy closer to society. “We want to foster interest in science and technology and show how nuclear energy can contribute to a more sustainable and safer future,” explains the SNE.
Workshops for Students
In the days leading up to the official opening of the Congress, the SNE will hold STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workshops for final-year secondary students. These workshops will provide training in technical and scientific concepts related to science, technology, and nuclear energy. They will take place on September 22 and 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Espacio UEx (Av. Virgen de la Montaña, 14).
Also aimed at younger audiences, Women in Nuclear (WiN) Spain and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) will hold a Mentoring Workshop on Tuesday, September 23, at the Annex Hall of the Congress Palace. Entitled “Promoting Future Leadership in Science and Technology”, the session will bring together students from Cáceres with junior and senior professional mentors from companies and institutions in the sector to share experiences and highlight the wide range of knowledge areas within the energy sector.
Intergenerational Talks
This year, senior citizens will also play a key role in the SNE Annual Meeting. Young Nuclear Professionals have organized an intergenerational session for students of the University of Seniors of Extremadura (UMEX) and their families. Under the title “Introduction to Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Power Plants”, young SNE speakers will engage with seniors to provide first-hand information on nuclear energy and answer questions in a close and participatory setting. This event will take place on Tuesday, September 23, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the San Francisco Cultural Complex (Rda. de San Francisco, 15).
Theater for All
In a region rich in art and theater, the SNE has also included a cultural performance among its leisure activities: “Helen of Troy. Six Voices. One Story. The Woman Behind the Myth.” Inspired by Miguel del Arco’s text “Judgment of a Whore”, this play raises many necessary questions and one certainty: it is time to listen to her. The performance will take place on September 23, at 7:30 p.m., in the main auditorium of the San Francisco Cultural Complex (Rda. de San Francisco, 15).
Talking Science over Beers
Young Nuclear Professionals also want to bring nuclear sector discussions to a more informal setting: the bar. That is why they are organizing “Science over Beers” (La Ciencia es la Caña). These are casual talks on nuclear energy and science that encourage dialogue and learning while enjoying a drink. The event in Cáceres will be held on Tuesday, September 23, at 9:30 p.m., at Los Siete Jardines (Calle Rincón de la Monja, 9).
For University Students
On Wednesday, September 24, the Annual Meeting for nuclear professionals officially begins, but there will still be activities open to other audiences. One example is the “Basic Course on Nuclear Science and Technology”, which will be held on Thursday, September 25, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Assembly Hall of the Building Sciences Department of the Polytechnic School of the University of Extremadura (Avda. de la Universidad s/n). The course is aimed at university students and introduces fundamental concepts of nuclear technology, including nuclear physics, radiation, nuclear power plants, fuel, safety, radiation protection, radioactive waste, and applications beyond power generation.
