Modular Reactors for a Cleaner Economy

>>Modular Reactors for a Cleaner Economy
Monographic

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are defined as nuclear reactors generally 300 MWe equivalent or less, designed with modular technology which optimizes the construction, operation and maintenance costs and to be deployed in production series with short construction times.

SMRs, are expected to provide a greater simplicity of design compared with the last century nuclear reactors designs, be more cost-competitive and even produce other sources of energy.  SMRs will have a key role in mitigating the climate change during the coming years, not only because the clean power generation by not producing CO2, but also because of their potential utility for non-electric applications such as hydrogen generation, heat production or seawater desalination among others.

Nowadays, there are several SMR designs and concepts globally, some under development while others are already designed, regulatory certified and ready for construction with a promising deployable horizon for the near mid-term future.
